Day four

Breakfasted at Henrys on much lauded poached eggs and Bernaise sauce. Quite tasty, although not as nice as Winston's. We had time for a quick trip down Broome's main street. The highlight of this was a visit to W.A.'s solitary public automated toilet. The group went back several times, fascinated by the electronically fed toilet paper, the auto jet of soap and water at the hand basin and the polite reminder to 'wash hands please and have a nice day' as the sensor doors opened then snapped shut behind them. I wonder what my hosts would have thought of a Japanese automated public toilet?

The scenery has changed again and we are now entering prime banana growing country, I am told. It is quite warm here.

Jungle scene

Bunky and I in the tropical jungles of Broome.

Again we drove, to arrive late in the day at Derby. We unloaded our travel gear from the caged trailer we store it in behind the four-wheel drive and ordered Chinese take-away for dinner. The TV was turned on, but it was soon abandoned in favour of another activity.

The youngest of our group, the Granddaughter, had brought a jigsaw puzzle to leave at the Derby house for when her brother's children came up. It had 500 pieces and depicted whales and dolphins at play in the sea. Our group consisted of an electrician, a Ghostbuster, a corporate filing clerk, a computer expert for the Australian police force, the owner of a shipping business, a gold inspector and a Laboratory Technician (the youngest of us at thirty-four years of age). We finished the puzzle around two in the morning, having worked non-stop except for losing some people now and then when they went off to eat. Reminded me of the dishwasher we tried to build once, only that venture wasn't nearly as successful.

Boab Tree - this particular one was used by the locals as a temporary jail house. Back then there was only the one court house and it was in Perth. Prisoners were taken down for judgement (if they were lucky) and spent the night in here on the way down.

We ate vegemite and cheese rolls for lunch today. They were not as disgusting as I had thought they might be.

On my travels today I have seen - Boab trees, sacred ibis, singing honeyeaters, crested pigeons, yellow-throated Miners and great flocks of black kites. They are the only bird-of-prey to form flocks.
