Sword Points

As told to Fire Frog by her great Grandfather when she was small.

Grandad was in the cavalry, part of the Kings Dragoons. They fought with a kind of sabre in those days, I have seen a replica, it is a fairly short sword with a slight curve to it. During World War 1 he led his men out and through the hills. Riding a little before his team, he spotted the enemy over the rise of a hill. Calling to his troop to follow, he charged over the top. But they hadn't heard him, so he charged alone.

Luckily for us, another cavalry group came upon the scene. Grandad lost his mount, and the leader of the other troop pulled him up behind him.

The fighting had been fierce; they were using their cavalry swords, the sabres that had curved blades. The two men once more prepared to join the battle, riding the same horse, when one of them noticed that Grandad's blade had been bent in the other direction during the fight. The double mounted horse with the two swords curving in opposite directions caught the men's humour, and they sat, in the middle of the war field, and laughed, and laughed.

That's how I remember him telling it.

And then he would smile.

Fire Frog.
